Oven Roasted Baby Back Ribs

Along the same vein as my carnitas slow cooker recipe, I have an oven roasted baby back ribs recipe for you today. It’s another cheat, a summer bbq recipe that doesn’t use the grill, and that’s easy to incorporate in the unpredictable days of summer when you’re not sure when you’ll next be running into the house.

After a quick rub down with a brown sugar spice mixture, these ribs cook for 2 1/2 to 3 hours in a low temperature oven. They will perfume the house with the smell of dinner and your family will be begging you to feed them, instead of looking at you apprehensively as they ask, “What’s for dinner tonight?” Maybe it’s just me, but that’s the only way my older kids ask about dinner.

It’s a good thing I made two pans of these ribs. I found Jack going to town on my resting pans, cutting off ribs and eating them cold for snack, not even waiting for dinner.

Once the ribs are cooked, just turn off your oven and let them hang out there until dinner. Then grab your favorite barbecue sauce, give them a quick brush, and pop them back in the oven for 10 minutes, just enough to heat them back up.

Then serve them with your favorite barbecue sauce, or plain. The rub makes a delicious caramelized coating and was enough sauce for me. These oven low roasted baby back ribs will be a summer dinner that will put smiles on everyone’s face.

This oven roasted baby back ribs recipe is a bit of a cheat because it doesn't use the grill, but you'll feel no shame when you taste how good the ribs are.

Ingredients

  • 2 or 3 full racks of baby back ribs, tough membrane removed and cut in half
  • ¼ cup of brown sugar
  • 1½ teaspoons of ground mustard
  • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon of ancho chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon of garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons of paprika

Instructions

  1. Cut each rack of ribs in thirds to make them easier to handle.
  2. If the racks still have a white membrane underneath, slide a sharp knife into the edge to remove it as best you can. It will make for better fall of the bone consistency in the end.
  3. Mix the sugar and spices together in a small bowl. Crumble them together with your fingers.
  4. Coat two cookie sheets with aluminum foil. Place the ribs meat side up evenly on both cookie sheet.
  5. Rub the spice mixture over both sides of the ribs. Get into the motion, really rub it in there. Discard any leftover spice mixture.
  6. Cook for 2½ hours to 3 hours at 300 degrees Fahrenheit.
  7. Take ribs out of oven and let cool. Or, if it’s dinnertime, move on to the next step immediately.
  8. Turn your oven back on at 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Brush your favorite barbecue sauce on your ribs. Cook for 10 minutes to heat the ribs back up. Serve with more of your favorite barbecue sauce or enjoy them unsauced. The rub crust is delicious on its own.
